Helpston is a popular village with mediaeval origins and many of the properties are built in stone under Collyweston slate roofs. Local amenities include two public houses, a post office, shop and a village hall. Helpston was also the birth place of the so called 'peasant poet' John Clare (1793 - 1864) and the primary school bares his name.

Stamford and Peterborough each lie about 6 miles away, offering extensive leisure and shopping facilities, as well as main line rail travel, with journey times to London King's Cross from 50 minutes. The A1 lies about 4 miles to the West of the village, affording excellent access to the major roads network.
